How does low dose Naltrexone work?

Low dose Naltrexone (generic form of ReVia®, Depade®) works by boosting the level of endorphins (natural hormone produced in the brain and adrenal glands) which can have tremendously positive health benefits.  New research has discovered a wide range of treatments for both mental and physical health by micro-dosing LDN.

Naltrexone is traditionally prescribed and FDA approved at higher doses to treat people suffering from opioid dependence; by binding and blocking opioid receptors in the brain, it reduces opioid cravings and dependence.

When taken at much lower doses, LDN has a wide range of well benefits which higher doses cannot provide.

Off-label use

Treatment for the conditions listed below with LDN is considered "off-label." Off-label use occurs when a doctor prescribes a drug for a purpose that is not officially approved by the FDA.

All conditions listed below have published clinical research and studies which show the efficacy of Naltrexone as a viable treatment option.

NALTREXONE USES and BENEFITS

Stress and cortisol

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) can help regulate cortisol, the "stress hormone," particularly by decreasing body inflammation and improving the immune system's response to stress.

Studies suggest  LDN can reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines and control the body's stress response. Cortisol is often dysregulated in people with chronic conditions like auto-immune disorders, fibromyalgia, anxiety, and chronic pain.

By influencing opioid receptors and the immune system, LDN helps to balance cortisol levels indirectly, reducing inflammation and normalizing the body's response to stress.

Autoimmune and inflammation

Low dose Naltrexone stimulates the release of endorphins.  The increase in endorphins help control and balance the body's immune system response, which positively influences immune system functioning.

By balancing immune system responses and reducing inflammation, LDN is a valuable, complementary therapy for a staggering range of autoimmune conditions.

Autoimmune diseases treated with LDN

Joint Inflammation (Arthritis)

  • Seropositive arthritis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis

Gastrointestinal and Digestive

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  • Irritable bowel disease (IBD)

  • Ulcerative Colitis

  • Crohn's disease

  • Mesenteric Panniculitis

Skin Conditions

  • Psoriasis

  • Eczema

  • Scleroderma

Other conditions treated with LDN:

  • Allergies

  • Sinus inflammation

  • Lymph node inflammation

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (Lupus)

  • POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome)

  • Sjogren’s Syndrome

  • Interstitial cystitis (bladder inflammation)

  • Sarcoidosis

Low dose Naltrexone weight loss

Here’s how LDN contributes to weight loss based on recent studies and clinical insights:

Appetite Regulation and Metabolic Support

LDN helps to regulate appetite by interacting with the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for hunger and cravings. By modulating endorphin receptors, LDN can reduce food cravings and create a balance between the calories consumed and the body’s energy needs.

This effect is particularly beneficial for individuals whose metabolism has been damaged, helping them align their calorie intake with their resting energy expenditure.

Anti-Inflammatory Benefit

Inflammation is a major factor that can contribute to weight gain and resistance to weight loss. LDN works as a potent anti-inflammatory agent, reducing inflammatory cytokines that can trigger hormonal imbalances.

This reduction in inflammation may improve insulin sensitivity, lower leptin resistance, and regulate thyroid hormones, all of which are critical in managing body weight.

For people with chronic pain or autoimmune conditions, LDN's anti-inflammatory properties can support more efficient weight loss.

Impact on Sleep and Weight Loss

Sleep plays a vital role in weight management, and inadequate sleep is often linked to weight gain.

LDN has been shown to improve sleep quality in individuals suffering from chronic pain, sleep apnea, or hypothyroidism, which can, in turn, aid in weight loss.

Better sleep helps reduce cortisol levels, a stress hormone that can lead to increased fat storage, particularly in the abdominal area.

Hormonal Regulation and Thyroid Function

LDN may also support weight loss by improving thyroid function, especially in individuals with conditions like hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It enhances the conversion of T4 to T3, the active thyroid hormone, which boosts metabolism.

Additionally, by reducing autoimmune activity, LDN may help those with thyroid-related weight gain issues.

Potential for Long-Term Weight Maintenance

When combined with lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, LDN has shown promise in helping individuals not only lose weight but maintain their weight loss over time.

Studies show that it can be particularly effective when used in conjunction with other weight management strategies like behavioral therapy and proper nutrition.

Mental health

LDN has been explored as a potential treatment for depression, anxiety, and PTSD due to its anti-inflammatory and immune system balancing properties.

Research suggests that LDN temporarily blocks opioid receptors, leading to a rebound increase in endorphin production, which can have very positive effects on mood and emotions.

Mental health conditions treated with LDN:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome

  • Impulsive behavior

  • Skin picking disorder

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

Neurological conditions
& chronic pain

LDN works by temporarily blocking opioid receptors, which leads to a rebound effect, increasing the production of endorphins and reducing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

This helps control pain and inflammation, particularly in conditions like fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis.

Research also suggests that LDN acts on microglial cells (immune cells which patrol for pathogens and damage) in the central nervous system; reducing chronic pain by preventing the over-activation of these immune cells, which are linked to the sensation of pain.

Chronic pain conditions treatable with LDN

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Chronic Pain

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Migraine Headaches

  • CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)

  • Neuropathic Corneal Pain

  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

Covid-19

Low-dose naltrexone has shown promise as a treatment for long COVID symptoms, particularly in addressing persistent:

  • chronic fatigue
  • brain fog
  • inflammation

Long COVID shares similarities with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and researchers have discovered that LDN can restore the function of ion channels in immune cells, improving the movement of critical ions like calcium. This process helps regulate many bodily functions that are disrupted in long COVID patients.

Cancer

LDN's ability to control and balance the immune system is a key benefit that makes it viable treatment for cancer.

It can significantly reduce cancer cell growth and tumor growth by interfering with cell signaling as well as by positively modifying the immune system.

LDN has been shown to prevent colorectal cancer progression and   promotes cancer cell apoptosis, also known as programmed cell death.  Which helps the body get rid of unwanted or abnormal cells.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:

The Nudge does not treat cancer, nor does The Nudge recommend the use of LDN as a primary treatment for cancer or replacement therapy. We strongly recommend consulting with an oncologist before electing treatment with low dose naltrexone.
