How does Tirzepatide work?

Tirzepatide is a dual acting agonist consisting of GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotrophic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1).

Tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro) works by mimicking two different hormones, GIP and GLP-1, in your body.  By activating these hormones, it helps your body release more insulin, reduces your appetite by slowing down how quickly your stomach empties feeling less hungry, and helps control blood sugar levels.

Tirzepatide tends to be more cost-effective offering higher percent body weight loss due to its dual action on both GLP-1 and GIP hormones compared to semaglutide, making it a potentially better option for those considering long-term treatment.

TREATMENT and BENEFITS

Tirzepatide average weight loss

Several clinical trials revealed that women lost up to 24.6%, while men lost up to 18.1%.  Tirzepatide results in greater overall outcomes and less reported side effects compared to Semaglutide.

In clinical trials, participants taking tirzepatide lost an average of 15-20% of their body weight over 72 weeks.

Most patients on Tirzepatide lose an average of 18 - 25% body weight combined with dietary and daily physical activity. Tirzepatide weight loss results show greater overall outcomes and less reported side effects compared to Semaglutide.  The 15 mg dose resulted in the greatest weight loss, with an average of 22%.

Based on a study conducted on 2,539 adults, after 12 weeks of Tirzepatide treatment, researchers categorized participants as "early responders" if they had lost at least 5% of their body weight, and as "slow responders" if they had lost less than 5% of their body weight. The study, known as SUMOUNT-1, was a phase 3, double-blind, randomized controlled trial conducted from December 2019 to April 2022.

Physical activity recommendations

Gradual progression

Incorporate lean protein sources such as poultry, fish, tofu, beans, lentils, and Greek yogurt into your meals. These proteins help you feel full, regulate blood sugar levels, and support muscle health. Lean protein shakes count toward your overall recommended daily calories from protein at about 10 - 35%.

Strength training

Incorporate muscle-strengthening exercises at least twice a week. These activities are crucial in countering the loss of lean mass often observed with anti-obesity medications and in enhancing muscle strength for daily activities. Functional strength training is beneficial across the lifespan and reduces the risk of muscle mass loss and maintaining physical function.

Balance training

Engage in balance exercises, particularly beneficial for older adults, to improve stability and prevent falls. Even younger individuals will benefit from enhanced kinesthetic awareness and safer mobility during weight loss.

Important considerations

We advise against exercising to the point of exhaustion and highlight the importance of staying hydrated. Our provider will provide personalized guidance on improving your physical activity, while also offering guidance for those with multiple chronic conditions or other specific health concerns.

Including these elements in your routine will not only support your weight loss efforts but also enhance your overall physical health and quality of life. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Dietary and nutritional recommendations

At Nudge Fit, we believe in a holistic approach to health, backed by evidence-based nutrition strategies to support your weight loss journey.

Lean proteins

Incorporate lean protein sources such as poultry, fish, tofu, beans, lentils, and Greek yogurt into your meals. These proteins help you feel full, regulate blood sugar levels, and support muscle health. Lean protein shakes count toward your overall recommended daily calories from protein at about 10 - 35%.

Whole foods

Prioritize whole, unprocessed foods like vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and healthy fats. These nutrient-dense options provide essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Aim to eat smaller, more frequent meals and never skip breakfast, which is vital for jumpstarting your metabolism.

Daily fiber

Consuming 25-35 grams of fiber daily is crucial, especially for those on GLP-1/GIP medications, which can cause constipation. Foods rich in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, can help alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort and promote regularity.

Hydration

Staying hydrated is essential, particularly when taking GLP-1/GIP medications.

Drink at least 60 - 80 ounces of water daily to help manage constipation and support overall health.
